Food Trail: Gopeng

Gopeng isn’t usually a food stop for travellers plying the highway between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with most choosing to stop in Ipoh for breakfast or lunch.

But Gopeng has its share of unique dishes, ingredients and finds that are not only made with fresh ingredients from around the district but cost a fraction of what you’d pay in larger towns.

1) Gopeng ‘Lai Fun’

The above is ‘Lai Fun’ a dish made up of noodles and paired with tofu, fu chuk, ikan bilis (anchovy) fish cake and other accompaniments and condiments.

It is a ‘Hakka’ dish brought in and tweaked to local tastes by early migrants to Gopeng from the Guangdong province in China.

The best place to find a bowl and explore Gopeng’s food fare is at the Gopeng wet market.

2) Gopeng Heritage House

Gopeng Heritage House serves an array of local delicacies including Gopeng grown coffee.

You can also take a tour and check out the unique design and architecture of the house, and antique collection within it.

3) Gopeng Coffee
