Winter Walk: Hokkaido University

Japanese Universities were not usually on the radar for most of my contemporaries when we were at the tertiary education level.

I am not sure if history has anything to do with it, or language, or culture, but I must say a walk through Hokkaido University in early Dec 2025, made me wonder why I never explored the option of studying in such a tranquil and historically rich university

We had the chance to explore part of its the campus on a sunny winters day, and just after a snowy night a few days later – with a chance to warm up at a wine tasting session in a beautifully restored heritage building, and beer and ice cream at the campus cafe.

The courses, facilities and amenities at this university is definitely one to check out, and if you are visiting Sapporo do explore this beautiful campus.

Niseko beer and a soft serve ice cream made with creamy Hokkaido milk – a great way to end the walk.

  1. Thanks for sharing your pictures! I think the university is overlooked by many travelers despite being so near to the station.

    1. Yes. I guess most people are not aware that the campus is open to visitors.
