Any kid born in the 80s will know Casey Kasem. He was essentially the guy who occupied one hour of my time, four days a week.
His show American Top 40 used to air at 10pm every night on Radio 4 (now Traxx FM) in Malaysia.
Though it was supposed to be my bedtime, I’d plug a earphone into the Sony transmitter radio above my bed and pretend to sleep as I listened to his commentary and anecdotes on the artistes and songs he played.
Sometimes, I’d record my favourite and popular tunes on another Sony radio cassette player we had. The era of mixed tapes!
There were many groups and solo singers during that time but the ones that hit the airwaves most often at that time (ones I remember at least) were Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Starship, Atlantic Star, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, the Bangles, Bananarama, Guns and Roses, Van Halen, A-Ha, Bobby Brown, Wham … etc.
I had those corny lace gloves, wore court shoes with folded socks, wore a band with a bow for my hair and tutu like skirts for a while ala Madonna and Bananrama 😎😆
So if there is anyone I need to thank for taking my hand and walking me through the world of music – it has to be Casey Kasem.
Thank you! Wherever you are … 💕
