Kristang Style Proposal (Video)

Catch a glimpse of the unique intangible heritage of the Melaka Portuguese community – the arranged marriage proposal (video below).

Kristang marriages begin with the ceremony of asking for a hand in marriage.

The lady sponsor (kumadri) on the groom’s side visits the bride’s parents and asks in a circuitous way for the bride’s hand in marriage. For example, she may say: “I was walking by and saw a beautiful flower, so I came to pluck it.”

Traditionally, special cakes are served at this point. This custom dates back to a time when arranged marriages were the norm.

In this video, Martin Theseira and Jacinta Lazaroo speak in the local Portuguese creole language.
